Wood handed Ashes opportunity
England have named Mark Wood in their team for an upcoming warm-up match as they consider their options for the next Ashes Test match.
The tourists head to Perth to begin their preparations for the third Ashes Test, which starts on December 14, and will take part in a two-day tour encounter with a Cricket Australia XI as part of their build-up.
The encounter gets underway on Saturday and will act as a proving ground for several members of the squad who have failed to feature in the first two Test matches.
Wood is one of those players looking to shine having missed much of the season with a heel injury, featuring in just two Test matches against South Africa last summer.
The Durham paceman has been with the England Lions recently, taking 1-64 from 14 overs in last month's encounter against a Queensland XI, and could come in to consideration for the third Test if he impresses during the upcoming warm-up match.
Others looking to impress are Gary Ballance, wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, Mason Crane, Tom Curran and Jake Ball, the latter having been dropped for the recent Adelaide Test.
Moeen Ali is the only player selected who featured in the recent defeat to Australia in the second Test, the Worcestershire all-rounder being handed the captaincy for the tour match.
England squad for warm-up with Cricket Australia on 9-10 December:
Moeen Ali (capt) (Worcestershire), Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Mason Crane (Hampshire), Tom Curran (Surrey), Ben Duckett (Northamptonshire), Ben Foakes (wkt) (Surrey), Keaton Jennings (Lancashire), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Mark Wood (Durham).
