McLaren keen to keep Alonso - Brown

20th April 2017, 18:17 by Bobbie Jackson

McLaren will do everything possible to keep Fernando Alonso next season, according to executive director Zak Brown.

The Spaniard is set to see his current deal with McLaren expire at the end of the 2017 campaign and Brown says they will not begin contract negotiations until the summer.

However, Alonso is expected to be targeted by a number of top-teams as the season progresses with the likes of Mercedes and Red Bull potentially looking to enhance their roster.

McLaren have struggled with engine reliability this term leading to suggestions that Alonso could consider an exit to pursue a third world-title.

Despite the team’s issues Brown remains confident that they can convince Alonso to sign fresh terms as long as they can provide a competitive car.

Brown said: "Everyone in pit lane who has a seat available would want to talk to him. We're not putting all our eggs in one basket, that would be irresponsible.

"But he is who we want in the car and we have agreed we will pick up conversations in the summer when we have a better sense of where we are.

"He's going to stick to his word, we're going to stick to our word, and if he has some coffees with some friends along the way that wouldn't be any great surprise.

"If we give Fernando a good race car we will keep him, I'm confident of that."
