Raikkonen issues Ferrari warning

12th October 2017, 12:54 by Craig Smithson

Kimi Raikkonen has warned Ferrari's Formula 1 rivals that they "will be even stronger next year".

The Finnish driver, who is approaching his 38th birthday next Tuesday, won his only Drivers' Championship title with Ferrari 10 years ago with the Italian constructors also not tasting success since.

There were high hopes that the Scuderia could end their decade-long wait this year with Sebastian Vettel embroiled in a two-way scrap with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton for the title.

However, reliability issues surrounding the Ferrari car appear to have scuppered Vettel's bid with Hamilton now 59 points clear of him with only four races remaining.

The team have not given up on the season just yet with 100 points still to play for but Vettel's team-mate, Raikkonen, is in no doubt they will be a stronger proposition next term.

He told La Gazzetta dello Sport: "Of course we would like a one-two in every race. But success depends on a lot of things and also the opponents.

"This year we clearly went in the right direction, doing a good job over the winter. And I am sure that we will be even stronger next year."
