Bae eager to get back to golf

13th September 2017, 16:36 by Neil Foster

Sang-Moon Bae is ready to return to golf after national service in Korea and admits the sport was never far from his mind.

The 31-year-old was forced to complete a two-year military commitment from November 2015 to August this year but is now free to return to the PGA Tour.

The Daegu-born ace was carving out a decent career for himself stateside and had already recorded tournament wins at the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Championship and the Frys.com Open the following year.

The PGA Tour created a 'Mandatory Obligation' category that would allow him to return to the circuit after his military service ended and the Presidents Cup ace says he has been focused on golf ever since he was forced to pick up a rifle.

"From the day when I was a private second class, a private first class and even the last day of the service, I wanted to be discharged from the military," he told reporters in Incheon. "I wanted to play in tournaments, I wanted to sleep at home and I wanted to drive.

"I want to thank the PGA Tour for allowing me to retain my membership and I feel fortunate for its consideration. If I’d had no exemption, I would have to enter the Web.com Tour. But since I don’t have to, I feel more comfortable and can play the tournament with confidence."

He is due to play in this week's Shinhan Donghae Open - an event co-sanctioned by the Korean and Asian Tours.
