DeChambeau heading to Birkdale

17th July 2017, 05:25 by Michael Holland

Bryson DeChambeau won the John Deere Classic in dramatic circumstances, picking up birdies at the last two holes.

The 23-year-old started final day four shots behind leader Patrick Rodgers and looked to be out of contention completely when picked up a bogey at the fourth hole.

However a birdie at the eighth was the kick-start he needed as he completed the back nine holes in six under, to finish on 18 under, one shot ahead of Rodgers.

The victory is DeChambeau's first on the PGA Tour and as well as a cheque for 1million US dollars, he has also qualified for the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

"I show everybody that, 'Look. There's plenty of ways to do it.' I do it my way and I feel comfortable doing it my way," DeChambeau told www.pgatour.com.

Rodgers, who crucially dropped a fourth shot of the day on the 17th, also had five birdies in a closing 70.

"Our tendency when you have the lead is to kind of hold on and play safe and guard against making mistakes. But I had guys coming at me with some really low rounds. Obviously Bryson shot a great one," said Rodgers.
