Reed recovers iron play after equipment fix

20th April 2017, 18:43 by Simon Barlow

Patrick Reed says he's back on track after fixing the loft angles on his irons which led to his less than impressive start to 2017.

The 26-year-old Texan has seen his world ranking slip from eight to 15 in the first few months of 2017, during which he has recorded just one top 10 finish in 12 events.

Although he's missed only two cuts, the five-time PGA Tour winner has hardly been in contention on the last day and that single top 10 performance came at the limited-field SBS Tournament of Champions.

Reed refused to point the finger any more than one comment he made in his press conference on Wednesday, 24 hours before teeing off at the Valero Texas Open.

"This was probably the one time that I could actually say my equipment wasn't set up how it's supposed to be for me," he said.

Reed says his irons were off by as much as two to two and a half degrees, which has made a huge difference to his statistics.

"Ever since we fixed that, it started trending in the right direction," Reed continued. "It's taken me a little bit of time to get into the new driver. Playing on both Tours I didn't have an off-season which I like to do a lot of my work on the off-season with my new stuff."

Reed carded a three-under round of 69 on Thursday to put himself in position to contend at San Antonio.
