Stenson paired with Spieth

17th July 2017, 15:03 by Chris Rivers

Henrik Stenson will start the defence of his Open Championship alongside Jordan Spieth and Kim Si-woo for the first two rounds.

The Swede stormed to the Claret Jug last year at Royal Troon after a final round of 63 helped him edge out Phil Mickelson as he claimed his maiden major in record-breaking fashion.

Having now given back the famous trophy to the R&A, the 40-year-old can look forward to trying to defend his title at Royal Birkdale.

Stenson will be joined by former world number one Spieth and Players Championship winner Kim when he tees off on Thursday morning.

Another of the eye-catching groups for the start of the Open will see Rory McIlroy, who has missed the cut on three of his last four starts, go round with world number one Dustin Johnson and South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.

Masters champion Sergio Garcia will pair up with Jason Day and 2015 Open champion Zach Johnson while Padraig Harrington, who lifted the Claret Jug the last time the tournament was held at Royal Birkdale in 2008, will link up with Pat Perez and Thomas Pieters.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka will be looking for back-to-back major successes and will start his quest alongside world number two Hideki Matsuyama and home hopeful Tommy Fleetwood.
