Limato set for season swansong

12th October 2017, 12:15 by Tom McGarry

Limato is likely to run for the final time this season when he competes in Friday's Challenge Stakes at Newmarket.

The five-year-old was an outstanding performer for trainer Henry Candy during 2016, as he bagged two Group One victories, but his form this year has not been as impressive, as he has failed to win any of his four starts.

The gelding is now expected to run for the final time this season in Friday's Group Two race, and Candy is hopeful the horse can round off his campaign with a victory.

He said: "It has been infuriating to have a horse of Limato's calibre and not be able to do anything with him (because of unsuitable ground).

"But I am very happy with his condition at the moment and looking forward to running him on Friday.

"This seven-furlong trip should be fine - I think he is capable of winning Group races at anything between six furlongs and a mile - and I don't see any problem with him handling the Rowley Mile as he is very light on his feet."

Limato is the favourite to win Friday's race, although he is likely to face a stiff challenge from the likes of the Owen Burrows' trained Massaat and Mick Halford’s Rehana, who has also endured a tough season.
