Kompany set to face Watford

13th September 2017, 14:20 by Gareth Freeman

Manchester City's Vincent Kompany appears to be winning the battle to be in contention for the trip to Watford on Saturday.

The skipper has been left behind by Pep Guardiola for the midweek Champions League opener against Dutch side Feyenoord to work on his recovery from the calf strain suffered on recent international duty.

Kompany failed to convince the club's medics he was fit to play a part in last weekend's 5-0 demolition of Liverpool although the Belgian has continued to train in the last couple of days.

The 31-year-old was able to complete an hour on Tuesday and the Citizens are hopeful he will make further progress during the next 48 hours.

Kompany has been plagued by calf issues in the last 18 months but this latest injury is considered minor and his sidelining is more of a precautionary measure, to avoid him risking another lengthy spell out of the first-team mix.

Brazil right-back Danilo has also proved to Guardiola that he is a capable deputy at the heart of his rearguard following his impressive showing against Jurgen Klopp's side.
