Saints defender ready for old friend

9th November 2017, 14:33 by Nick Harris

Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk is looking forward to coming up against an old friend when Holland take on Scotland.

The two sides are due to meet in a friendly at Pittodrie on Thursday night and the Saints centre-half will come up against old team-mates from Celtic, one of them being Nir Bitton who remains a close personal friend.

He said: “I speak to him a lot and we are probably going on holiday together, as well. He is a good friend and it is good to see him playing so well.

“Hopefully, he can keep doing what he is doing because he is a top player.”

Van Dijk is hoping to get on the score sheet if he can, he said: “I have scored some big goals for Celtic up at Pittodrie so it is also good to come back to Aberdeen, especially with the Dutch national team.

“We have a good strong squad here. We know we face a good Scotland team, but we are here to win.”

Meanwhile fellow defender Maya Yoshida is set to start for Japan in France on Friday when they take on Brazil in Lille.
