Itoje has jaw operation

6th December 2017, 16:56 by Neil Foster

England second row Maro Itoje has undergone surgery on his fractured jaw and faces a race to be fit for the Six Nations.

The Londoner has had two metal plates inserted in his face and will see a specialist on Thursday to determine how long it will be before he is allowed to get back out on the pitch.

Reports claim that the minimum recovery period for that type of injury and operation is eight weeks, with the Red Rose set to begin the defence of their Six Nations title on February 4 away to Italy.

Itoje started every match as Eddie Jones' side won this year's crown, but only featured in two autumn Tests after being rested for England's opening fixture against Argentina.

He came off the bench against Australia and started in the victory over Samoa but suffered the injury in Saracens' 20-19 Premiership defeat by Quins at after a collision with Mike Brown.
