Jones calls on Lions rejects for Pumas tour

20th April 2017, 10:27 by Craig Smithson

England will have Dylan Hartley, Joe Launchbury and George Ford for the summer tour to Argentina after they missed out on the Lions.

Head coach Eddie Jones waited almost 24 hours after Warren Gatland confirmed his British & Irish Lions' squad for the three-Test tour to face world champions New Zealand in June and July, before revealing his plans for the two Tests against the Pumas.

Captain Hartley, who was a surprising exclusion from the Lions' squad, will lead the Red Rose, while the likes of Launchbury, Ford, James Haskell, Chris Robshaw and Mike Brown will also travel after also missing out on facing the All Blacks.

With 16 England players in the Lions' squad, Jones has used the opportunity to include 15 uncapped players in his 31-man travelling party.

Flanker Sam Underhill, cross-code convert Denny Solomona, and fly-half Piers Francis will feature, along with 18-year-old Sale twins Ben and Tom Curry and 19-year-old Saracens forward Nick Isiekwe.

Jones has been unable to call on Harlequins' Jack Clifford and Sam Jones of Wasps because of injury, while there were snubs for Danny Cipriani, Christian Wade and Semesa Rokoduguni.

Looking ahead to the tour to Argentina, in which England will play Tests in San Juan on Saturday June 10 and in Santa Fe a week later, Jones said: "We are looking forward to going to Argentina and winning 2-0.

"There are a few new faces so every training session and team meeting will count."
