No Grand Slam targets for Federer

17th July 2017, 11:56 by Craig Smithson

Roger Federer claims he does not have any career Grand Slam title targets in his mind after claiming a record eighth Wimbledon title.

The 35-year-old Swiss has made a storming comeback in 2017 after he missed the second half of last year, including the Rio Olympics, because of a knee injury which required surgery.

Federer claimed his first major of the year - and first in just under five years - at the Australian Open and then opted to miss the clay-court season to prepare for an assault on the All England Club.

His decision paid off as he comfortably defeated Marin Cilic 6-3 6-1 6-4 in Sunday's final on Centre Court to claim his second slam of 2017 and the 19th of his career.

Federer will now look to get his hands on a sixth US Open crown next month, shortly after he celebrates his 36th birthday.

And while many tennis fans are pondering how many Grand Slams Federer could end up with before he retires, he is adamant that there are no targets in his head.

"I’ve not set my sights on a number of Grand Slams that I have to or want to achieve," he said. "I never had that."

Federer added: "I was very content at 17 [Grand Slams] and then even happier at 18, happier still at 19. So, 17 [the year 2017] is a wonderful number.

"For me, it’s about enjoying myself is a wonderful number. It’s about enjoying myself and staying healthy, and we’ll see what happens. The target is to enjoy being Wimbledon champion for a year and Australian Open champion for a year."
