Pregnant Serena to miss 2017
Serena Williams' spokesperson has confirmed that she is pregnant and will now miss the remaining three Grand Slam tournaments of 2017.
The 35-year-old world number two, who won the 23rd Grand Slam title of her career at the Australian Open in January, has not played on the WTA Tour since after withdrawing from tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami.
Williams put her absence down to a knee problem at the time, but on Wednesday posted a picture of herself on social media app Snapchat showing a bump with the message "20 weeks".
The picture was deleted but her spokesperson later said: "I'm happy to confirm Serena is expecting a baby this Fall."
Williams, who announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in December, will now miss the remainder of the campaign, including the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
She is due to return to top spot in the world rankings next week and can retain that position in the rankings as long as she returns to tennis within 12 months of giving birth.
