Wozniacki powers past Pliskova

12th August 2017, 12:51 by Tom Hill

Caroline Wozniacki was far too strong for world number one Karolina Pliskova as she knocked her out of the Rogers Cup.

Wozniacki had to battle several rain delays, with four in total causing problems on Friday, but she was able to maintain her composure and secure a 7-5 6-7(3) 6-4 victory.

All of the delays came in the first set and Wozniacki seemed to gain encouragement as she bounced back from 3-0 down.

Pliskova seemed unsettled by the stoppages as Wozniacki claimed her first win against a world number one, and her reward will now be a clash against Sloane Stephens or Lucie Safarova in the semi-finals.

Speaking after the victory, the 27-year-old said: "Almost every tournament I've played this year there has been a rain delay so at this point I just have to laugh because I feel like it is following me.

"Every time this year when it has been raining I've had a great tournament, so I thought this must be luck."
