Smith demands strong finish from Villa

3rd April 2019, 17:02 by Tom Hill

Aston Villa coach Dean Smith has claimed the only side that can stop their promotion push this season is themselves.

The Villans have been in fine form of late, winning their last five matches in the Championship. Smith's side are now unbeaten in six matches and that form has allowed them to move up to sixth in the table.

While automatic promotion looks a step too far, Smith has issued a rallying cry ahead of their final seven league games.

"The only thing that can stop us is ourselves really," Smith told the club's official TV channel. "If we're right every game, we will be absolutely fine. We need to keep it going.

"It is a vibrant place at the moment. There is a spring in people's step. We are winning games but playing well, too. The performance levels have been right up there and that is the important thing.

"We are also playing some really entertaining football as well and we need to continue that."

Villa are next in action on Saturday when they take on Sheffield Wednesday and a win could move them up to fifth, depending on Bristol City's result against Wigan Athletic.
