Bassini completes Bolton deal

17th April 2019, 16:16 by Bobbie Jackson

Former Watford owner Laurence Bassini has agreed to buy Championship side Bolton, subject to EFL approval.

The 49-year-old was handed a three-year ban from being involved in a position of authority with any EFL club in 2013 but he is expected to pass the current tests.

Bassini's takeover comes off the back of a difficult time financially for the Lancashire outfit and it should provide stability going forward.

Full-time playing staff and non-playing staff have reportedly still not been paid their wages for March - almost three weeks after they were due.

The former Watford chief, who also attempted to buy Portsmouth in 2012, will also take full control of the hotel at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Bolton said in a statement: "The change of ownership requires approval by the English Football League before the deal can be finalised. The financial terms of the transaction will remain private and confidential between the parties.

"We are sure supporters will be very pleased to understand that as part of the transaction, all of the existing loans to the club will be settled in full and the associated charges removed, meaning the business will be debt free for the first time in many years."
