Canos signs long-term Bees deal

9th October 2019, 17:18 by Aidan Perkins

Brentford winger Sergi Canos has signed a new four-year deal to tie him to the Bees until 2023.

Canos, who joined Brentford in January 2017 after a previous loan spell, has committed his long-term future to the Championship club, much to the delight of boss Thomas Frank, who says the Spaniard is one of the best players.

“I am very pleased that we have extended Sergi’s contract,” said Frank. “Along with Ollie Watkins and Rico Henry, we have now signed three of our young, talented players – among the most promising in the division – to long-term contracts and each of them has the potential to improve further.

“Sergi has had a very good start to the season. He has developed as a player and has been more consistent and delivered in games over the full 90 minutes. He has been working hard to get better and we have seen that on the pitch.”

A product of Barcelona’s youth academy, the 22-year-old failed to make the grade at Liverpool as he made just one substitute appearance for the Reds before moving on to Norwich. He’s now shining at Griffin Park and has three assists from 10 Championship games so far this term.

He was linked with a move away in the summer but Brentford managed to keep hold of the Spain Under-19 international, who has 23 goals and 21 assists in 148 games in all competitions for the club.

Frank’s side are 17th in the second tier and host Millwall next on October 19 following the international break.
