Howson optimistic on quick return

17th September 2019, 13:47 by Tom McGarry

Middlesbrough ace Jonny Howson hopes to be back in action within a "couple of weeks" following hernia surgery.

Howson had been one of Middlesbrough’s brighter performers over the opening weeks of the season, but he missed their last two matches against Bristol City and Reading and has now confirmed he went under the knife last week.

“I’ve had a little bit of surgery on a hernia,” Howson told Gazette Live. “I flew to Germany last Monday and had it done Tuesday morning, and it went well and hopefully I won’t be too far away.”

Boro have four Championship matches to come over the next three weeks against Cardiff, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and Birmingham before the second international break of the season, which appears to be a realistic time for Howson to return.

However, the former Norwich star is hopeful of returning a little sooner, particularly as he has seen Anfernee Dijksteel fill in admirably in his absence at right-back.

“I’m not sure of the timetable, but I’m outside now. I’ve started running a little bit and it feels really good,” Howson added. “So hopefully I can kick on now and within a couple of weeks I like to think I’ll be back.”
