Woodgate receives Howson backing as Warnock links grow

2nd December 2019, 13:33 by Tom McGarry

Jonny Howson says Jonathan Woodgate is the man to turn Middlesbrough's fortunes around despite speculation linking Neil Warnock with a move to the Riverside.

The pressure in continuing to mount on Boro boss Woodgate, with Saturday’s comprehensive 4-0 defeat at Leeds leaving them just a point above the relegation zone and having only won one of their previous 12 Championship games.

Howson has more experience than most when it comes to relegation, as he has twice suffered that fate with Norwich in the Premier League, while he was also part of the Leeds team that dropped down to League One in 2007.

The 31-year-old is convinced Boro have enough quality within their squad to ultimately survive in the division this term and he firmly believes Woodgate is the right man to take the club forward.

“I’ve been in this situation with Leeds and Norwich, where I was relegated,” Howson told the Northern Echo. “It’s not a nice feeling but I firmly believe this squad we’ve got, we’ve got lads to come back from injury as well, will have enough.

“He (Woodgate) can get us out of it. It plays a major part in it that he’s so positive and he gives us the belief to stick to it. That’s only going to help us.”

Woodgate’s position at Boro is believed to be under threat following their hammering at Elland Road, with speculation intensifying that Warnock could be the man to takeover.

The 71-year-old left his position at Cardiff last month but he boasts a wealth of Championship experience, although by the sounds of it, Boro’s players are hoping the club ultimately opt to stick with Woodgate.
