Jones wouldn’t swap Butland

24th August 2019, 13:52

Stoke boss Nathan Jones says he wouldn't swap Jack Butland for any other goalkeeper in the Championship, despite his recent struggles.

The 26-year-old faces being dropped for Saturday’s encounter with Leeds United after making two costly mistakes in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Preston.

Jones admitted Butland had been distracted by all the talk surrounding his future this summer with Bournemouth having reportedly been tracking him closely, while Aston Villa were also credited with an interest.

Butland was understood to be open to a move to the Premier League in the hope of keeping himself in the England set-up but Stoke priced him out of a move.

Jones believes the shot stopper needs to refocus on matters on the pitch now the transfer window has shut but claims his recent showings haven’t affected his overall opinion of the Potters No.1.

The Welshman stated: “There is so much going around and it’s unsettling at times… and it unsettles a very good football club.

“Nobody speaks about him being Stoke City’s number one. They speak about him being England’s number two, or Bournemouth’s first choice, or him getting an offer from Europe.

“Jack needs to focus on being a fantastic keeper, which he does, but there’s so much going on around him and when he does make an error then it gets highlighted massively.

“He will be hurting, but you wouldn’t swap him for any other keeper in the Championship and I’m pleased he’s ours.”
