Birch surprised to see duo stay put

3rd September 2019, 14:43 by Tom Hill

Swansea City chairman Trevor Birch has confirmed he is surprised to see both Andre Ayew and Borja Bastian stay at the club.

The Welsh outfit are still adjusting financially to life in the second tier after their relegation to the Championship in 2018.

Swansea’s board have had to make several financial cuts to keep the books healthy and new boss Steve Cooper has also helped steady the ship.

Cooper has taken Swansea to the top of the league table, but both Ayew and Borja were set to leave before Monday’s European transfer deadline.

Both players are Swansea’s most expensive signings, and Birch admits he was shocked to see them stay at the Liberty Stadium.

He told the club’s official website: “The two unexpected bonuses have been Borja and Andre Ayew.

“To see them still part of our squad when the European transfer window closed last night was great news for everyone associated with the club. That last sentence is not one I thought I would be writing.

“Andre has shown in his first few games back what a quality player he is.

“Borja has been like a new signing. He has returned to the club from his loan spells in Spain fully committed and with renewed energy and confidence.”
