Archer receives cap but Lord's washed out

14th August 2019, 18:24 by Simon Barlow

Jofra Archer will make his Test debut on Thursday after a day one washout at Lord's hurt England's hopes of squaring the Ashes series.

The entire day's play was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of persistent rain in London.

A mid-afternoon break in the weather did allow a start to be scheduled, only for further rain to intervene.

But, although the toss has not taken place and the teams are yet to be officially named, Archer is assured of his Test debut.

The Sussex pace bowler was presented with his England cap by Chris Jordan - confirming that he will be the man to replace the injured Jimmy Anderson.

Sam Curran is expected to be the player to miss out from England's 12-man squad, meaning batsman Joe Denly and left-arm spinner Jack Leach will both play.

Australia coach Justin Langer confirmed that Josh Hazlewood will play ahead of fellow pace bowler Mitchell Starc, with James Pattinson rested after the first Test.
