Australia enjoy opening day against India

6th December 2018, 13:00 by Nick Harris

India find themselves on the back foot in the first Test against Australia after finishing day one in Adelaide on 250-9.

India had Cheteshwar Pujara to thank for them getting anywhere near a decent total as he batted for six hours in sweltering conditions to score 123 before being run out by Pat Cummins' direct hit to end the day's play at the Adelaide Oval.

The Baggy Greens had an opportunity to get Pujara earlier than they did but choose not to review a not out decision when he nicked one on 89 before he then went on to reach his 16th century, and first in Australia.

The 30-year-old said: "I knew that I had to stay patient and wait for the loose balls.

"The way they bowled, they bowled in the right areas. I also felt that our top order should have batted better but they will learn from the mistakes.

“Hopefully we will bat well in the second innings.”

India had been in trouble after slumping to 86-5 not long after lunch but Pujara's knock, combined with notable efforts from Rohit Sharma (37), Rishabh Pant (25) and Ravi Ashwin (25) helped steer them away from a collapse.

Ultimately, the day went to the Australian bowlers as Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon all took two wickets apiece to leave the hosts in a commanding position heading into Friday.
