Australia still in it - Hussey

3rd January 2019, 12:32 by Nick Harris

Despite a tough opening day, former Australia batsman Mike Hussey has not given up hope the hosts can level the series with India.

India have taken a big step closer to securing a first series win Down Under after finishing the opening day of the fourth and final Test on 303-4.

The Aussies are already 2-1 down in the series and need to win in Sydney to level affairs but that will be an uphill struggle after India dominated the opening day in sweltering conditions at the SCG.

Cheteshwar Pujara continued his excellent form on the tour, ending the day unbeaten on 130 while Mayank Agarwal made 77.

However, Hussey believes Australia still have a chance and have not been batted out of the series just yet.

“Australia can still find a way to win the fourth Test against India, but they will need to be aggressive early on day two,” he told Fox Sports.

“I’d like to see Australia come out in the first 10-15 overs with a fiery spell of bowling. Hanuma Vihari in particular doesn’t look as comfortable against the short ball.”
