Bancroft admits he 'didn't know any better'

26th December 2018, 13:35 by Simon Barlow

Cameron Bancroft has confirmed David Warner encouraged him to use the sandpaper that led to the Australian ball-tampering scandal.

An interview with Bancroft, whose nine-month suspension from top-level cricket ends this weekend, was broadcast during the first day's play of the Boxing Day Test match between Australia and India.

In it, the opening batsman said the then Australia vice-captain had been the man who had encouraged him to use the yellow piece of sandpaper in a bid to scuff the ball and get it to reverse swing in the now infamous Third Test against South Africa.

Warner's role as the mastermind of the ball-tampering plan was known and Bancroft – who was 25 at the time of the incident – admitted he was too eager to please to say no.

"Dave [Warner] suggested to me to carry the action out on the ball given the situation we were in in the game and I didn’t know any better,” Bancroft said.

"I didn’t know any better because I just wanted to fit in and feel valued, really — as simple as that.

"The decision was based around my values, what I valued at the time and I valued fitting in … you hope that fitting in earns you respect and with that, I guess, there came a pretty big cost for the mistake."
