Bayliss demands response after West Indies defeat

27th January 2019, 12:05 by Gareth Freeman

England coach Trevor Bayliss has demanded a response from his side after their humbling 381-run first Test defeat by West Indies.

The tourists faced an uphill battle in Barbados after managing a first innings score of just 77 at the Kensington Oval.

The second Test in the three-match series begins in Antigua on Thursday, and Bayliss has backed England to bounce back after their first Test humbling.

"The previous times we've done this, it's kicked the boys into gear and they've come out played well in the next match," he told Sky Sports. "I hope they've not been taking it easy. We'll have to have a chat about this."

Skipper Joe Root rejected the suggestion a lack of preparation led to the loss as England didn't play a first-class game before the Test.

He told the BBC: "The guys worked extremely hard over those four days and we got as much out of them as possible. They did everything they could to be ready.

"We came into this game well prepared. Guys were ready to go and it is disappointing that we didn't perform to our potential. I'm not going to hide behind an excuse like that."
