Bumrah puts India in control with six-wicket haul

Jasprit Bumrah confounded Australia's batsmen by claiming six wickets on day three as India took a grip of the third Test at Melbourne.

Bumrah reduced Australia's batting line-up to rubble as the hosts only made 151 in their reply to India's first innings total of 443-7 declared.

And, despite a second innings collapse which saw Pat Cummins take four wickets in nine balls, India look on course to take a 2-1 lead in the four-match series.

Resuming on 8-0, openers Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris held out for 24 runs before Ishant Sharma removed Finch for an early breakthrough.

Bumrah then accounted for Harris for 22 before superbly trapping Shaun Marsh with a late-swinging slower ball off the final delivery before lunch.

The 25-year-old, who became the first Asian bowler to claim five-wicket hauls in Australia, England and South Africa in the same calendar year, later revealed that it was Rohit Sharma's idea to attempt the slow-ball yorker.

"When I was bowling there, the wicket had become really slow," he said. "The ball had become soft and nothing really was happening.

"So on the last ball before lunch, Rohit was there at mid-off and he told me, 'You can try a slower ball, like you bowl in one-day cricket.' So I thought I could give it a go.

"Some of the [Australian] guys play with hard hands, so I wanted to try that. I was trying to bowl a fuller slower ball, which may dip or go towards short cover. That was the plan and it worked," he added.

Despite a 292-run first innings advantage, Indian skipper Virat Kohli decided not to enforce the follow-on.

Cummins, who was Australia's best bowler in the first innings, responded with 4-3 off his first four overs to give the hosts hope.

But Mayank Agarwal, who made 76 on debut, provided further resistance and remains unbeaten on 28 overnight.
