Buttler and Root set to return to England

8th January 2019, 15:36 by Neil Foster

Jos Buttler and Joe Root have ended their Big Bash League duties with Sydney Thunder ahead of England’s tour to West Indies.

The duo enjoyed differing fortunes with the New South Wales outfit, with Buttler currently the tournament's leading run-scorer, with 273 from seven innings.

The Lancashire man averaged 39, with a top score of 89, but things did not go so well for England Test captain Root.

He managed only 99 runs in his seven innings, with a highest score of 26 and an average of 14.14, and it remains to be seen if he returns Down Under next winter.

The pair suffered a losing conclusion to their stint as Thunder were beaten by Brisbane Heat.

Chasing 187 to win, they were 34-2 when rain brought the match to a halt and Heat triumphed by the Duckworth Lewis method.

Buttler was out lbw for five, while Root was unbeaten on nought when the heavens opened, and they will now focus on international matters, with England starting their tour of the Caribbean against a West Indies Board XI on January 15.
