England suffer late collapse as South Africa claim one-run win

12th February 2020, 20:16 by Tom Hill

Lungi Ngidi was South Africa's hero as he helped the hosts beat England by one run in the first T20 of the series in East London.

Eoin Morgan's men opted to field first, and Chris Jordan claimed 2-28 as the hosts finished on 177-8 after 20 overs.

Having look set for a big score at the midway point in their innings, England rallied in the final 11 overs to halt the Proteas charge, and Morgan's men will have been very confident as they started their response.

The tourists were cantering to their target of 178 after Jason Roy hit 70 from 38, but his dismissal started the England collapse.

Morgan's score of 52 meant England only needed seven from the final six balls, but Ngidi took control as he had Tom Curran caught in the deep before he bowled Moeen Ali.

Adil Rashid then needed to hit three from the final ball, but he was run out while trying to force the super over.

The second encounter of the three-match series starts in Durban on Friday and Ngidi will be hoping to kick on after his impressive display.

He told ESPN Cricinfo after the win: "It wasn't a great day at Johannesburg, but here it's not over until the last ball is bowled. Run in hard as you can. Hit your length, and all of a sudden, their team was on the back foot. Very fast-paced game, but it's about how you bounce back. I didn't panic under pressure, they seemed to be cruising, but my job was to get wickets."
