England skipper delighted after series whitewash
Captain Joe Root was delighted after England completed a series whitewash over Sri Lanka with a 42-run success in the third Test.
England finally came through on the fourth day in Colombo but were made to wait after a spirited effort from the hosts saw them get closer to their target than was comfortable for the tourists.
Kusal Mendis (86) and Roshen Silva (65) added 102 for the sixth wicket to give the islanders some hope while Malinda Pushpakumara smashed a rapid unbeaten 42 batting at number 11.
However, with Moeen Ali taking 4-92 and Jack Leach 4-72, they were all out for 284 as the Three Lions completed a clean sweep for the first time in Sri Lanka.
Root was a happy man after the final wicket fell and full of praise for his men.
“I am proud of everyone, it’s been a brilliant tour and a real team effort,” he said. “I’m not surprised (by the whitewash). I knew we were capable but to do it in the way we have and as consistently as we have is a real improvement from these players. Hopefully we can use this as a springboard for moving forward.
“It’s been a really good experience for the group but we have to keep looking to get better.
"The guys have stepped up whether they are experienced and been around a lot, or the guys who have come in and performed as they have done."
