Finch praises Stoinis after T20 win

22nd November 2018, 01:27 by Michael Holland

Australian skipper Aaron Finch praised Marcus Stoinis for keeping his calm in the dramatic T20 victory over India at the Gabba.

Australia have had it tough in the shortest format of the game but finally ended their losing sequence with a four-run victory over the side ranked second in the world.

Australia needed a cool head in the final over, and up stepped Stoinis to limit India to eight runs off it, taking two wickets in the process, much to the delight of Finch.

"He's very confident," Finch said post-match. "He's been practicing it a lot. (Death bowling is) one string he wants to add to his bow.

"And going in with the three frontline quicks, Stoinis as the allrounder, he's the one we get to do that job at the end and he did it beautifully.

"His plans were nice and clear and simple and he executed well under pressure."

Stoinis added the plan worked to perfection as both Dinesh Karthik and Krunal Pandya caught on the long-off and long-on boundaries from slower deliveries.

"Finchy spoke to me earlier in the day and he said (him bowling in the final overs) could be an option if (Zampa) plays," he added.

"It was a pretty simple plan – take the pace off the ball, make them hit to the long side and just commit to that one hundred per cent. So it was a clear plan."
