India begin World T20 prep against Proteas
India captain Virat Kohli feels the upcoming Twenty20 series with South Africa begins their preparations for the T20 World Cup in 2020.
The Asian giants are set to take on the Proteas in three T20 matches, starting in Dharamsala on Sunday.
There is still more than a year before the seventh edition of the World T20, with Australia set to host the tournament between October 18 and November 15 next year.
However, there is not too much international 20-over cricket on the agenda and so every match and series is vital - a fact not lost on the India skipper.
"As far as the road map is concerned, whenever there is a world tournament coming up, it is like a milestone and you start preparing from it backwards," said Kohli.
"I think every team will go through same process before T20 WC."
India won the inaugural Twenty20 Word Cup, beating Pakistan in the final, but they have only been back to the final once since then.
West Indies are the defending champions and the only nation to have won the competition twice, beating England in 2016 as Carlos Brathwaite clubbed four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to get his side over the line with two balls to spare.
