India hand Shastri two more years as coach

16th August 2019, 16:43 by Simon Barlow

Ravi Shastri has been given another two-year term as India head coach and will continue in the role he has held since 2017.

The former India all-rounder was one of six candidates to be interviewed for the position by a three-member BCCI panel, alongside former India internationals Robin Singh, who had a coaching role with Mumbai Indians, and Lalchand Rajput, who was in charge of Zimbabwe and Afghanistan.

Mike Hesson, the former New Zealand coach who guided them to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2015 final; Tom Moody, the former Sri Lanka and Sunrisers Hyderabad coach and Phil Simmons, who was coach when West Indies won the ICC World T20 2016 title, were also in the running for the job.

One consideration for the panel would have been Shastri's partnership with Virat Kohli, which has seen the pair form a strong bond.

Under their leadership India, who remain top of the ICC Test rankings, recorded an historic Test series win in Australia and their first bilateral ODI series win in South Africa.
