India set to take series lead

29th December 2018, 15:51 by Neil Foster

India reduced Australia to 258-8 in pursuit of 399 in Melbourne and are closing in on third Test glory and a 2-1 series lead.

Having dismissed the Aussies for just 151 in their first innings in reply to India’s 443-7 declared, the Asians slipped to 54-5 at stumps on day three and they added some quick runs on Saturday morning before declaring on 168-8.

Mayank Agarwal made 42 while wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant hit a rapid 33 to give the innings some momentum.

Pat Cummins took 6-27 but the Baggy Greens' top six could not match the fast bowler and they were soon in trouble at 63-3.

Aaron Finch made three while fellow opener Marcus Harris was dismissed for 13 and when Usman Khawaja was out for 33, it seemed as though the writing was on the wall.

Shaun Marsh (44) and Travis Head (33) put up some resistance but it was Cummins who held up the tourists' victory charge with an unbeaten 61 batting at number eight.

Ravindra Jadeja has three wickets to his name while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have a couple each and surely now only the weather can save Tim Paine’s side.
