Nabi to retire from Test cricket

7th September 2019, 18:37 by Tom Hill

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has announced his decision to retire from Test cricket later this month.

The 34-year-old has helped Afghanistan rise through the rankings in world cricket, with the Logar-born star playing in their first-ever T20I and ODI.

He was also part of the side that played in the first Test match against India in 2018, but the former Leicestershire ace has now decided it is time to pass the torch.

Nabi's last game in a Test jersey will be in this weekend's one-off Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

Confirming his decision, he told reporters via the the Afghanistan Cricket Board: "Test cricket is an important format that every cricketer wants to play.

"I have served Afghanistan for the last 18 years. It was my dream as well to help Afghanistan obtain Test status, and that dream is realised now.

"We have a maximum of 1-2 Test per year, and I want, instead of me, that a young player gets to play since the emerging youngsters are playing well in domestic cricket. I want them to get the chance they deserve so that we have a good Test team in the future as well."
