Overton doubt for Boxing Day Test

19th December 2017, 13:44 by Craig Smithson

England look set to be without bowler Craig Overton for the fourth Ashes Test against Australia in Melbourne because of injury.

The 23-year-old Somerset seamer managed to participate in the third Test in Perth this past week, despite suffering a nasty blow to the ribs from a Pat Cummins delivery during the second Test defeat in Adelaide.

However, Overton took a further blow to the ribs when he fell awkwardly attempting an audacious caught-and-bowled at the WACA and it has resulted in a flare up around the area.

Speaking after England's innings defeat, which handed Australia an unassailable 3-0 series lead and the Ashes urn in the process, Overton rated his chances of playing in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG as doubtful.

"We're not sure at the moment," he said. "It will be reassessed in the next couple of days, and go from there. At the minute, there's quite a lot of swelling around the ribs.

"If that settles down quickly, who knows? Melbourne might be tough, but there will still be a chance for Sydney as well."
