Pakistan release Arthur

8th August 2019, 02:19 by Michael Holland

Mickey Arthur could soon take charge of England after Pakistan revealed they are not renewing the contract of their head coach.

The 51-year-old led Pakistan to the 2017 Champions Trophy title, but they had a disappointing World Cup this summer, failing to reach the semi-finals, and a parting of the ways has now happened.

Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ehsan Mani confirmed the news when saying: "It was time for new leadership. The PCB remains committed to its fans and followers and we will do our utmost to ensure we make decisions that continue to move Pakistan cricket forward in all formats."

While the hunt is on for Arthur's successor, the South African is now being heavily linked with the role of England coach that will soon be vacated by Trevor Bayliss.

Bayliss is set to step down when his contract expires after The Ashes series and Arthur will now be free to step straight in if England decide to go down that route.
