Pollock hails Steyn after 422nd Test scalp
Shaun Pollock has hailed Dale Steyn after being overtaken as South Africa's leading wicket-taker during the first Test versus Pakistan.
Steyn's dismissal of Pakistan batsman Fakhar Zaman during the morning session at SuperSport Park was his 422nd Test wicket and took him past Pollock, whose record had stood since he quit in 2008.
"He is a true leader of the attack and deserves the record," said Pollock, who was commentating on television at the time of the wicket.
The former Test great offered a thumbs-up signal to Steyn, who responded with the same gesture after being lifted shoulder-high by celebrating team-mates after Fakhar edged to Dean Elgar at second slip.
But it proved to be Steyn's only wicket of the day as fellow paceman Duanne Olivier claimed a Test-best 6-37 to mop up the middle order as the tourists posted 181 in just 47 overs.
Steyn's haul has come in 89 matches, at an average of 22.60, while Pollock averaged 23.11 across 108 matches.
