Ponting tips up Smith's return as skipper

19th September 2019, 14:15 by Nick Harris

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has tipped star batsman Steve Smith to skipper the Baggy Greens in the future.

Smith lost his position as the Aussie skipper after the ball-tampering fiasco in South Africa and was banned for a year but, after a summer where he led the way in their successful defence of the Ashes in England, 'Punter' sees a way back.

Ponting says he can see him being handed the chance to lead his country again in the future, saying: "Steve Smith – I think he will captain again. I don't know what the Australian public might think about that.

"To me it seems like Cricket Australia has left the gate open, so if Cricket Australia thinks it's OK then I'm happy with. I think he knows his role now, I don't think it will be too long until he's captain again."
