Root switches focus to next Ashes series
England have to switch focus to winning the Ashes in Australia in 2021-22 and the process starts today, Joe Root says.
England and Australia go head-to-head in the final Ashes Test, with the first day getting underway at the Oval today, but the baggy greens lead 2-1 and have the urn in the bag.
England will be determined to win the Test and level the series and Root says that would be a good start as they plan ahead to the next series down under.
"We have to use the next two-and-a-half years to focus on putting in a winning tour down under," said Root. "That's a real incentive for everyone, to be part of something special there."
Root himself has come under pressure and there has been talk of a change of captain, but the 28-year-old is set to remain at the helm and is clear with his goals for the future.
"I know the direction I want to take this team and it's about starting that now, not after this series," said the Yorkshire batsman.
"It's about trying to make sure we use this match as a stepping stone, win this game, have a really strong winter and move forward as a group."
