SA chief urges respect

15th February 2020, 15:00 by Neil Foster

South Africa's cricket chief wants the home fans to be civil towards Steve Smith and David Warner on Australia's upcoming tour.

The pair are now back in the Baggy Greens' ranks after serving a 12-month ban for their part in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked their 2018 trip to South Africa.

The duo were booed and jeered mercilessly as Australia retained the Ashes with a 2-2 scoreline in last summer's encounter in England.

While it may have affected Warner, who struggled throughout the five games, Smith seemed oblivious to the noise, scoring runs for fun and, at times, keeping his side in matches almost single-handedly.

They will now take on the Proteas in a Twenty20 and one-day series and Cricket South Africa interim chief executive Jacques Faul made it clear what he expects from the supporters.

"I would plead with South African fans to respect our opponents and don't go overboard with these things," he said. "It's competitive on the field, and we don't need it. Sport in general doesn't need that behaviour.

"We have a very strict policy in terms of fan behaviour and we will evacuate people but the damage will have been done."
