Santner out of England Test series

13th March 2018, 17:38 by Neil Foster

Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of the New Zealand side due to take on England in an upcoming Test series.

The 26-year-old, who has taken 34 wickets in 17 Tests to date, performed well in the recent one-day series with the Three Lions but could not prevent the Kiwis slipping to a 3-2 defeat.

He was expected to be part of the Black Caps side to take on Joe Root's men in two five-day matches, starting in Auckland on March 22.

However, the knee injury that has hampered him in recent weeks has failed to settle down and he will now be forced to spend an extended period on the sidelines to allow the injury time to heal.

The Hamilton-born star will miss the IPL and a stint in county cricket and leg-spinner Todd Astle, who played the last of his two Tests in November 2016, has been recalled to the squad.
