Sibley deserves call says Troughton

20th September 2019, 12:49 by Nick Harris

Warwickshire opener Dominic Sibley is the best red ball opener in the country says his county coach, Jim Troughton.

England have struggled for a settled opening pair at Test level but Troughton says they need look no further than Sibley who reminded everyone of his abilities this week after racking up 215no and 109 in Warwickshire's win over Nottinghamshire.

The selectors name their squad for the trip to New Zealand on Monday and Troughton says he deserves to be involved.

"He has shown at the back end of last year and all of this year, his monumental efforts and mental strength and technique," Troughton said.

"If there is talk about resting certain players for that series - I think it doesn't count as part of the Test Championship - so if there's an opportunity to do it, brilliant.

"Having said that, regardless of whether or not they are going to rest players, he's the best red-ball opener in the country."
