Sydney victory the focus for Root

13th January 2018, 15:01 by Alex Jack

England skipper Joe Root is desperate to see his team finish the Ashes on a high after drawing the fourth Test in Melbourne.

The tourists were unable to find the wickets needed at the MCG on the fifth day as they saw the encounter drawn to keep the series score at 3-0 in favour of the Baggy Greens.

With the fifth and final Ashes Test to come at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 3, Root wants his side to finish the series on a high.

He said: "You can see that the desire is there. We managed to take more wickets than them and score more runs in the first innings, so I am proud of the fact we have been able to do that.

"This will give the guys a lot of confidence, knowing we can get big scores and bowl Australia out on a very unresponsive wicket.

"We are a better team than we have shown on this trip and this is a benchmark for us to move forward.

"We have to try and go one better in Sydney and get that win that we want."
