Pienaar calls for Ziyech praise

18th April 2019, 12:57 by James Mason

Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech deserves more praise for his fantastic performances this season, according to Steven Pienaar.

Morocco international Ziyech has been a key part of the Ajax side that has reached the Champions League semi-finals and are currently top of the Eredivisie on goal difference from PSV this season.

The 26-year-old has scored 19 goals and registered 20 assists in 42 games across all competitions this term but it is the likes of Dusan Tadic, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt that have attracted the most attention.

South African Pienaar, who played for the Dutch outfit from 2001-2006, believes Ziyech doesn't get enough praise because of his nationality.

"Ziyech is one of the players that has been playing really well all season, he's the type of player that when you watch him in action, he makes you happy," he said at a Heineken UEFA Champions League event.

"He's a complete footballer, but underrated, you know if you're not European, you are always underrated."
