Binotto satisfied with Leclerc season

22nd August 2019, 14:28 by Dan McCarthy

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto says Charles Leclerc has had a positive first half of 2019 with the team.

The F1 season is preparing to return to Belgium next weekend after its four-week summer break, with Ferrari having not won a race so far.

Leclerc came closest at the Bahrain Grand Prix when he was leading for the majority of the race after qualifying on pole position, but a mechanical fault with his car saw him drop to third.

However, he has kept up well with team-mate and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and looks set for a bright future in the sport.

Speaking about the first 12 races of the campaign, which see Leclerc fifth in the table, 24 points behind Vettel, Binotto says he has been happy with the maturity of his young charger.

"If I look at the first half of the season, then it was very positive, as Charles has matured," Binotto said as quoted by Motorsport-Total.com.

"There were high expectations of him and a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

"He knows that he is an important pillar of our present and future team."

"I think he's learning from his mistakes, and that's even more important," he concluded.
