Durand opens up on F1 hopes

16th September 2019, 17:27 by James Mason

Benjamin Durand has confirmed the goal is for Panthera Team Asia F1 to make its debut in Formula 1 in the 2021 season.

Rumours during the summer break had suggested a new outfit called Panthera had set up shop near the British GP venue Silverstone and were looking to be accepted into Formula 1 for the 2021 campaign.

It has now been confirmed the team's full name is Panthera Team Asia F1 and one of its founders, Durand, has revealed making an F1 debut in 2021 is the goal.

He was quoted as saying by grandpx.news: "Our goal is Formula 1 in 2021."

However, Durand may have to add another year to that after F1's sporting boss Ross Brawn said he wants 2022 to be the date for potential new teams to join the sport.

"We have a surprising number of teams showing interest," he said. "But what we're saying to these teams is 'let's introduce the rules first and stabilise the situation before we start looking for new teams'."
