Ocon tips Leclerc for glory in 2019

3rd January 2019, 15:53 by Tom Hill

Former F1 driver Esteban Ocon has predicted Ferrari new boy Charles Leclerc will be in the fight for the Drivers' title next year.

Leclerc was snapped up by the Italian giants after just one season with Sauber in 2018.

He finished 13th in the Drivers' Championship but Ferrari chiefs have seen some potential and he will now partner Sebastian Vettel in 2019 after the Scuderia parted ways with Kimi Raikkonen.

Ocon will only be watching as a fan next year after losing his seat with Force India but he is excited to see how Leclrec performs behind the wheel of a car capable of winning races.

He told RaceFans.net: "I think Charles will fight for the title next year for sure. At least it won’t be a surprise to me.

"I know him pretty well. The first race we race together was in 2005 in mini-karts we were seven, eight years old. And we were first and second and I was on the inside we crashed in the last corner of the last lap so he didn’t finish and I finished like sixth or seventh.

"This was the first time we met and all our career we’ve been fighting like this together."
