Perez claims superiority over Ocon
Sergio Perez claims he is a better race day driver than Esteban Ocon even though the Frenchman outshone him in qualifying in 2018.
The Mexican was beaten on Saturday 16 times during the 21 race season, but Perez eventually finished the championship in eighth place, 13 points ahead of Ocon, and scored Force India’s only podium of the season after finishing third in Azerbaijan.
Perez will continue to race for the newly branded Racing Pint team in 2019, alongside Canadian Lance Stroll after his father bought out the team.
Ocon, on the other hand, has been left without a race seat and instead will be the test and reserve driver from Mercedes.
And Perez claims that he is a superior racer despite admitting Ocon had the better of him in qualifying.
Speaking via F1 Today, Perez said: “I think in qualifying he probably had the upper hand although the gap between us in qualifying is less than a tenth.
“He was more often in front in qualifying than myself. But I think the gap in the race is much bigger than qualifying.
“In the race I thought I did the bigger difference, always on the pace, the pace was a bit stronger in the race.
“We were very close again but I think he was just a little bit better in qualifying and I was quite a bit better in the race.”
